Psych Club & Psi Chi

The Psych Club is one of the most active student organizations on campus. Our club has grown steadily over the past several years. Activities abound for Psych Club members. We sponsor seminars given by professors and community members on their specialty areas (e.g. sports psychology, criminal profiling, intimate relationships, etc). Each year the psychology club organizes a presentation from faculty members on “How to get into graduate school” which has been tremendously helpful for students planning to continue their education in Psychology. Also, we have speakers who give seminars about jobs for people with Bachelors degrees in Psychology. In addition to informative seminars, the Psych Club is active in fun fundraising. We sell chocolate candy each year at Halloween and Christmas. We also design and sell Psych Club t-shirts. The Psych Club uses part of the funds it raises for pizza parties, film nights, and other activities.

The Psych Club also has the academic interests of students in mind. We regularly sponsor a trip to Chicago to attend the Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) convention. Students are able to watch presentations and guest speakers from all areas of Psychology. The convention is incredibly interesting and fun. Students are able to learn what is currently going on in the field of Psychology and enjoy some Chicago nightlife. Through fundraising efforts and departmental assistance, students are asked to pay only $20 for registration and lodging. It’s hard to beat that deal, considering we stay on Michigan Avenue!

The Psych Club is proud to have developed the tradition of “Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week”. The Psych Club helps organize an event in which students gather outside during the middle of the night to listen to guest speakers and learn more about the serious issue of homelessness. Along with other student organizations, we gather several boxes of clothing and nonperishable food items for the poor and the homeless.

Not only are psychology students helpful, we are also academically sound. U of I has one of Indiana’s largest Psi Chi chapters. Psi Chi is the national psychology honorary society. Members are chosen based on academic excellence. Psi Chi encourages students to do research that can be presented at the Mid America Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference. In addition, students have presented at other conferences across the United States. Psych students are top notch!
