Options for Doctoral Degree Completion
The Psy.D. program has been designed to allow for
several degree completion options to accommodate the needs of students.
In the 3+1 option, students take all the required doctoral coursework
over a three-year period. They then complete a one-year internship
as the final requirement in obtaining their degree. In the 4+1 option,
students complete their doctoral coursework in a four-year period.
This added time allows students the opportunity to take additional
courses of special interest, to gain further specialization in some
area, to focus more intensively on completing their dissertation
before going on internship, or to simply take fewer credit hours
per semester.
Some students may select a 4+1 degree pattern in
order to allow time to obtain their Master’s degree on the
way to completing their doctorate. Students may elect to obtain
an MA by taking two additional courses (Psy-591 and Psy-592, Case
Conceptualization and Treatment Planning) and writing a “Clinical
Case Study.” Obtaining an M.A. may enhance students’
chances of obtaining a competitive internship position or postdoctoral
position in some states or locations.
In addition to three and four-year options, and the
opportunity to obtain a Master’s degree, students may also
choose to complete their doctorate on a part-time basis. Students
who select this option will need to create a degree plan in consultation
with their faculty advisor to ensure that all required and prerequisite
courses are sequenced appropriately. Part-time students must complete
the doctoral program within the seven-year time limit specified
by the University.
