Each Assistantship involves up to 10 to 12 hours per week of work in the School and covers a portion of the student’s tuition. Graduate Assistants must remain full-time students in the program and maintain acceptable academic and professional standing in the program. Federal Loans

Federal Stafford Subsidized / Unsubsidized Loan

Annual maximum (2 consecutive semesters) $8,500

Cumulative maximum (undergraduate and graduate combined) $65,500

Federal Stafford Extended Unsubsidized Loan

Annual maximum (2 consecutive semesters) $10,000

Cumulative maximum (undergraduate and graduate combined) $73,000

Doctoral Students may borrow up to $26,000 per 2 semesters.

Subsidized Loan: need-based loan; interest paid by the government during in-school periods.
Unsubsidized Loan:
non need-based loan; interest accrues during in-school periods and paid by the student.

The interest rate on Stafford loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 1998 but before June 30, 2006 is variable and may change on July 1 of each year but will never exceed 8.25 percent. The rate is based on:

  • The 91-day T-bill rate + 1.70 percent during in-school, grace, and deferment periods.
  • The 91-day T-bill rate + 2.30 percent during repayment periods.
  • The current interest rate on Stafford loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 1998 but before June 30, 2006 is 7.22 percent in repayment and 6.62% during in-school, grace, and deferment periods.

Stafford Loan Eligibility
The subsidized loan amount may not exceed the total cost of attendance minus the expected family contribution and all other aid received. Cost of Attendance includes all expenses involved in attending college for an academic year: tuition, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses. The expected family contribution is calculated by applying the federal methodology to the information you provided on the FAFSA. It is a value used to determine eligibility for need-based aid.

You must report to the financial aid office any other aid you will receive (i.e. outside scholarships, employer reimbursement, assistantships, etc.). The unsubsidized loan amount may not exceed the total cost of attendance minus all other aid (including the subsidized loan amount).

Stafford Loan Application Process
To apply for a Federal Stafford Student Loan, you must complete the following:

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
You may file the FAFSA on paper or electronically on the Web (www.fafsa.ed.gov).
  • University of Indianapolis Aid Application (UAPP)
  • Federal Stafford Loan Application (included in award packet)

Both the paper FAFSA and UAPP are available in the Financial Aid Office and on the Financial Aid website in January preceding August enrollment.

Within 4 weeks of mailing the FAFSA to the processing center, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). If no corrections are needed, you may keep the SAR for your records.

The Student Aid Report is a document sent to the student by the central processor to report the results of filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The color of the Student Aid Report corresponds to the color of the FAFSA.

The Financial Aid Office will receive from the processing center a document similar to your SAR. Once we have this and your University Aid Application, we will review your loan eligibility. If additional documentation is needed, we will notify you. Once your file is complete, we will send you an award letter with a Stafford loan recommendation. In the award folder, a loan application will be enclosed for you to complete and return to the financial aid office. We recommend that you stay with the same lender when applying for new loans. We begin processing loan applications in June and encourage you to return your loan application as early in the summer as possible.

Loan Disbursement

The Stafford loan money will be disbursed to the school by the lender, and we will apply the funds to your billing account (about 10 days before classes begin). If you have an academic year (an academic year consists of two semesters, usually August through May) loan, the loan money will come in two disbursements; one in August and one in January. If you borrow more than your direct costs (direct costs are charges billed by the university: tuition, room and board, and fees), then you will have a credit balance and will receive a refund no earlier than the first day of classes.

If you have previous loans in repayment, contact your lender/servicer and request an in-school deferment form. This may be available on your servicer’s website. After filling out the student section, the school section is to be completed by the Registrar's office. While you are a full-time student, your payments will be deferred.

Alternative Loan
If you are in need of loan funds above the Federal Stafford Loan maximums, you may want to pursue an alternative loan. Sallie Mae offers an alternative loan, which allows student to borrow up to the annual cost of education minus other aid received. To be eligible, you must demonstrate credit-worthiness or have a cosigner who is credit-worthy. Payments are deferred until program completion. Applications are available upon request in the Office of Financial Aid. If you are going to apply for an alternative loan, we suggest that you begin the process as soon as you receive your award notification so that you allow plenty of time for the loan to be processed.

If you have any questions or are in need of aid/loan applications, please contact us (see contact information below).
